The purpose of this device is to measure amounts of sugar in a solution which can be converted into alcohol.  Hydrometer readings should be recorded both before and after fermentation.  Refractometers may also be used to measure sure in wine and beer; however after fermentation additional computations must be made to correctly calculate the values.  For more information about using a Refractometer after the start of fermentation visit our Blog Entry Here
